Boris Dvornik was born to the family of a carpenter. His acting experience started at the age of 8 when he took parts in plays for children. In his high school days he was learning to be electrician, but soon decided to pursue full-time acting career instead. After finishing National Acting School in Novi Sad he enrolled in Drama Academy in Zagreb. While on the first academic year, he began his movie career in The Ninth Circle (1960). His film debut was instant success, and in his second movie, Martin u oblacima (1961), he proved his abilities in comic roles. Dvornik soon became on of the movie icons of former Yugoslavia, together with 'Bata Zivojinovic', Milena Dravic and Ljubisa Samardzic. However, the zenith of popularity was reached by his role in humorous cult series "Malo misto" (mini) and some other light pieces that followed in the 1970s. However, although still being one of the most prolific actors in history of former Yugoslav and Croatian cinema and TV, Boris Dvornik in 1980s mostly used to work in the Croatian National Theatre in Split. In 1992, due to the friendship with Antun Vrdoljak, he flirted with politics for a couple of months. Dvornik is married, has a daughter and four granchildren, while two of his sons - Dean Dvornik and 'Dino Dvornik', who used to cameo as children in his movies - are now major pop stars in Croatia.- Actor

Croatian film actor and director. Vjekoslav Vjeko Afric was born August 26, 1906, on the island of Hvar in what was then Austria-Hungary, but is now Croatia. He was schooled initially in Hvar, but finished high school in Split, on the Croatian mainland. Following his basic schooling, he enrolled in the Academy of Figurative Art, specializing in painting. Eventually he studied at Zagreb's School of Dramatic Arts. He graduated in 1927 and made his way to Vienna and Prague before returning to Split and joining the Dalmatian National Theatre. He toured Serbia in 1928 with the theatre company of the Actors' Association, then spent the next three years in various theatrical companies in Sarajevo, Banja Luka, and Belgrade. Moving back to Zagreb, he joined the new Great Theatre of Zagreb and helped found the Zagreb Drama Studio, where he acted and directed. Over the course of these years, he played many roles, especially classic roles such as Hamlet, Orsino, Oberon, Raskolnikov, and Faust. During the Second World War, Afric joined other actors in organizing stage productions to be presented in areas that had been liberated from the Nazis. He directed and acted in plays produced by the Theatre of the National Liberation of Yugoslavia from 1942 to 1944 and worked closely with Yugoslav partisans in the war effort. After the war, he became a pioneer of the new Yugoslavian film industry, working on socialist cinema. He also founded a short-lived film school, and taught at the Academy of Dramatic Art. Afric directed the first post-war feature film in the Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia, entitled Slavica, a story about young partisans in the war. His third film as director, Hoja! Lero!, was dismissed by critics, and Afric decided to retire from directing film. Although he continued to act in films occasionally until 1965, Afric devoted most of his efforts to teaching. He co-founded and directed the High Film School in Belgrade, and then became a full professor at Belgrade's Academy of Theatre Arts and the rector of the University of Arts in that city, as well. He served as president of the Trade Union of Cultural and Artistic Institutions. Afric retired in 1970, living out his final years in Tribunj, writing essays and his memoirs. He died just days before his 74th birthday, on July 28, 1980, in Split. He is buried in the Alley of Deserving Citizens in Belgrade's New Cemetery. and others.- Cedo Martinic was born on 27 January 1960 in Pucisca, Brac, Croatia, Yugoslavia. - Miljenko Smoje was born in a poor family of labourers. He finished high school in Split in 1941, but his education was interrupted by WW2 and Italian occupation. Smoje joined resistance movement and somehow managed to survive both the arrest by Italians and being kicked out of Communist party. After the war he finished college and worked few years as a teacher. In 1948 he joined regional newspaper "Slobodna Dalmacija" and worked there as reporter until his retirement in 1979. Through the years Smoje discovered great sense of humour, as well as a talent to capture unorthodox characters. Soon he became writing humouristic pieces and thus became one of the most popular writers of that genre in former Yugoslavia. His television debut was _Nase malo misto (1970) (TV)_, series about small Dalmatian town and its picturesque inhabitants. Series was great success and still has a cult status in Croatia. After some minor works for movies and TV, Smoje tried to repeat that success with _"Velo misto" (1981) (mini)_, tragicomic historical chronicle about his home town of Split. The series was also success, but most people still prefer his former masterpiece. Last years of his life Smoje spent working as satirical columnist for controversial weekly newspaper "Feral Tribune".
